Background of the Study:

Risk management is essential for sustaining the performance of corporate banking, particularly in a volatile economic environment. Zenith Bank in Abuja has adopted comprehensive risk management strategies to mitigate credit, market, and operational risks. The bank employs advanced analytical models, stress testing, and real-time monitoring systems to identify and manage potential risks that can affect its corporate banking portfolio. These strategies are integral to maintaining asset quality, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering customer trust. Effective risk management not only minimizes potential losses but also improves decision-making processes and enhances overall performance. In the context of corporate banking, where large financial transactions and complex client needs are common, robust risk management practices are critical for ensuring financial stability and operational efficiency (Ibrahim, 2024). This study investigates the effect of risk management strategies on the performance of Zenith Bank’s corporate banking division, examining how these practices influence profitability, operational resilience, and client satisfaction, while also considering the challenges posed by an unpredictable economic environment (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the Problem:

Despite sophisticated risk management strategies, Zenith Bank faces difficulties in fully mitigating risks that impact corporate banking performance. Inconsistent risk assessments and external economic shocks sometimes result in unexpected losses, thereby affecting profitability and customer confidence.

Objectives of the Study:

• To evaluate the effectiveness of current risk management strategies in corporate banking at Zenith Bank.

• To identify the main challenges that impede effective risk management.

• To propose enhancements to risk management practices that improve overall performance.

Research Questions:

• How do risk management strategies influence corporate banking performance at Zenith Bank?

• What challenges hinder effective risk mitigation in corporate banking?

• What improvements can enhance risk management outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

• H₁: Effective risk management strategies significantly improve corporate banking performance.

• H₂: External economic volatility and internal process inefficiencies negatively impact risk management.

• H₃: Enhanced risk monitoring and assessment techniques improve corporate banking stability.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study focuses on Zenith Bank’s corporate banking operations in Abuja. It utilizes internal risk reports, financial performance data, and interviews. Limitations include evolving market conditions and data reliability.

Definitions of Terms:

• Risk Management Strategies: Methods employed to identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks.

• Corporate Banking Performance: The financial and operational outcomes of corporate banking activities.

• Risk Mitigation: Actions taken to reduce the adverse effects of risk factors.
